JUNE 2009
TIME FOR A HOT DOG SUPPER AND A PARADE!!
Conserve your gasoline and come out and enjoy an evening with your neighbors! We will return once again to Wrenn Street on Thursday, June 18th, for an early Independence Day celebration (RAIN DATE: Wednesday, June 24). No “4th” would be complete without a parade, so we invite all children to bring your decorated trike, bike, stroller, or wagon (or just walk along) to help us kick off the picnic. Several of our kids created/painted their own shirts last year. Please meet at the corner of Wrenn and Alpine around 6:15pm, with the short parade along Wrenn to begin at 6:25. We’ll have marching music, and a prize or two for the most festive entries, with dinner to follow.
Everything costs more except our picnic!! For $2.00 per person, and $1.00 for age 5 and under, you’ll enjoy hotdogs and chili (and a few veggie-dogs!), beans, slaw, chips, a drink, and cookies…you can’t beat that price anywhere! Please bring lawn chairs or a blanket for your picnic.
We need help with any tables that you can share … card tables or larger … bring them early if you can, or contact Donna Rhyne at 292-0985 for pickup. We especially welcome new residents and will give you special nametags so you can meet each other. Bring the new babies too! No reservation needed. We’re planning for around 100 folks, so don’t miss out. Wear your visor from last year, we’ll add a lei for the first 50 to sign in, and pull out your red, white and blue duds! We look forward to seeing you there!!
NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION DUES
It’s wayyyyy past time to ask for our annual dues … the best deal in town at $10 per household. The amount is modest, and goes toward beautification, keeping the fee low on fellowship events such as hot-dog suppers, and significantly helped to finance our new entry signs. It’s also a signal that you support our neighborhood! Using the pre-addressed envelope, mail a check to the Dellwood Neighborhood Association to Treasurer Kathryne Bailey at 322 Holmes Drive, or bring it with you to the hotdog supper on June 18th. We will provide an updated address directory to Association members, to be printed later this month.
THE COOK HOUSE IS SIZZLING!!
Warren and Jean Cook, of 204 Dellwood Drive, are delighted to announce the wedding of their daughter, Laura Jean, to Steven Brundage, son of Tom and Laneita Brundage of Travelers' Rest. The Brundages moved to Greenville from Kansas 2 years ago to work at Bob Jones University. The wedding is Friday evening at 7 pm on July 17 at Heritage Bible Church on Hudson Corners in Greer, and all Dellwood neighbors are invited to attend! After a week long honeymoon in Cancun, Mexico, the couple will reside at the CVA apartments across from BJU. This fall, Steven will begin a masters degree in piano pedagogy while working for the school as the information desk assistant manager. Laura will continue her work as a voice faculty member.
The Cooks also proudly announce the engagement of their youngest child, Matthew, to Stephanie Gembola, the daughter of Scott and Carol Gembola of Simpsonville. After a “whirlwind" courtship of 6 years (they were high school sweethearts!), Matt decided that the proposal needed to be worth the wait.
Securing permission from Steph's parents and teachers, Matt surprised Steph at her Friday morning clinical at Greenville Memorial Hospital. He spirited her away to Atlanta where they hopped a plane to Chicago, home of Matt's Uncle John (Mom's brother) and family. The next morning, they caught an early train to the city, where they enjoyed the Shed aquarium and then “meandered" over to the John Hancock Center. Imagine Stephanie's surprise to discover that they had reservations for lunch in the Signature Room on the 95th floor! With a rose on the table and a ring in his pocket, Matt proposed. Steph accepted, and they returned home that evening to elated families! After a yearlong engagement, the couple plans to be married at Heritage Bible Church on May 15, 2010. This past May, Matthew received a B.S. degree in financial management from Bob Jones University, and began his new job as administrative manager at Your Creative People, the branding and design firm of Justin Murphy, a Dellwood neighbor. Thanks to Jean for sharing all the wonderful news!!
AND MORE !!!
Ted and Paula Cheadle of 305 Dellwood Drive announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter Amber Cheadle to Joshua Lindsey on July 11 at the War Memorial Chapel on the campus of BJU.
DELIVERING ... AND PICKING UP, TOO
“Thanks” to the neighborhood from our letter carrier John Dempsey, for our participation in the NALC food drive on May 9. His route was very generous in contributing food for area food banks.
John knows many of our neighbors personally, and is an important part of keeping a watchful eye on our community. We can help speed his route by making sure Tuesday trashcans and recycle bins and our vehicles are clear of our sidewalks, or away from any street mailboxes, so that his truck has a clear path and parking area. Ask him about his new granddaughter … he’s a proud grandpa with a picture ready!
CONGRATULATIONS
Jim Block of 314 Dellwood Drive was honored on April 18 at the annual MTT ministries (Make a Timothy Today) held at Morningside Baptist Church for his work in photographing their teams before they leave for the mission field. They take short-term teams of young people to different areas of the world to help existing missionaries and to introduce young people to the idea of missions.
Once again (3rd time in 4 years) Dellwood is home to one of the 10 finalists in the Greenville County Teacher of the Year program! Jennifer Johnston of 221 Dellwood Drive has been selected as one of the 2008-2009 top 10 teachers. Jennifer is a middle school language arts teacher at Sterling School, and was recognized as the Teacher of the Year at Sterling by her peers. Congratulations on this honor to recognize the “best of the best”!
Congratulations to Holli Hamner of 407 Dellwood for being chosen Teacher of the Week for the Greenville News City People (3/18/09). Holli was recognized for her innovative work in incorporating hand chimes with math lessons for students at Sara Collins Elementary.
Happy 25th Anniversary to Terry and Nilly Barr of 2 Dellwood Drive, on June 21st!!
Happy 60th Anniversary to Don and Achsa Rollins of 7 Alpine, on April 2!! They are the original owners of their Dellwood home.
Congratulations to Victoria Allen, of 30 Coventry, for her selection to the Wind Ensemble for County Band and for participation in the Region Band. This ends her 6th year with the Marching Generals of Wade Hampton High, playing both flute and piccolo, serving on the Leadership Council for two years, and leading them as Drum Major this past year. She hopes to continue her piccolo in college.
Following in his sister’s musical footsteps, her brother Robbie Allen is in his 5th year with the band, plays trombone, and is on the Leadership Council for the Marching Generals.
GRADUATIONS
All graduations are special, but one of the most grand must be a college graduation from a military service academy. John and Holly Hamner of 407 Dellwood Drive enjoyed not just graduation day, but an entire week of festivities in Annapolis, Maryland as their youngest son Joel graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. A week of parades, festivities, parties, concerts, Blue Angels, and awards was capped with an address from the President of the United States and a congratulatory handshake. Joel was recognized with several awards for excellence in his major of history. Currently he is on a mission trip with friends in the Amazon of Brazil, and in August will report to the nuclear power school in Charleston. We share your pride on this very special occasion as your son continues in service to our country.
And CONGRATULATIONS to all other Dellwood graduates…

YARD OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to longtime residents of more than 40 years, Virgina and Joe Garrett at 152 Dellwood, recipients of the Yard-of-the-Month award for May. Their front yard is a lush and inviting shade garden, and the rear is filled with lots of native species. Virginia is the master gardener in residence…be sure to stop to chat when you spot her working…she is sure to need a break!
Congratulations to the newest house in Dellwood, Jo Anne Conner at 205 Holmes, recipient of the Y-O-M award for June. Less than a year ago this was a house under construction with bare dirt for a yard. What a beautiful transformation!
Thanks to Nilly Barr and daughter Layla who make the selections for each month. They may be looking at you for July!
TRAVELS
Welcome home to Terry and Nilly Barr and daughters who survived escorting 14 Presbyterian College students on a great trip to Berlin, Drezden, and Prague. Terry is a Professor of English and Department Chair at PC.
Tim and Donna Rhyne recently returned from a too-short trip with friends to several western U.S. national parks, along with the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam. No money was removed from Las Vegas.
Eleanor Allen enjoyed winter trips to visit family in Florida.
Send any Digest news to Donna Rhyne at dirhyne@aol.com, or call 292-0985. Tell us where you’ve been, brag on the kids, give us ideas for news or activities. We need you!!

SYMPATHY
We extend our sympathy to the family of former longtime Dellwood resident Carolyn Sawyer who passed away on April 13th after an extended illness. Carolyn was a leader in many of the women’s organizations in Greenville, as well as our own Dellwood Club. She served her church in many capacities, including providing the sermon in sign language and teaching the hearing-impaired Sunday School Class. An avid hiker, she was less than 100 miles from reaching her goal of hiking the entire 2175 miles of the Appalachian Trail. A memorial was sent in her memory.
We also extend sympathy to Tim Rhyne and family of 114 Dellwood on the death of his mother, Doris Rhyne, on 1/26, and to Carolyn Thomas and family of 27 Alpine Way on the death of her mother Harriet Elizabeth League on 5/19.

Please continue to notify our Sunshine Lady, Lois Newell, with news of those needing a cheery note or card from the community. Contact her at 244-1528. Some of those in the last few months included.
Larry Thompson of 106 Alpine, with a broken leg.

SIGN UPDATE
Our new entrance signs were removed, welded, repainted, and posts repainted. The modifications appear to be working to minimize sideways swing.
BROOKSIDE UPDATE
Thanks to neighbors who attended the City drop-in at the Lutheran Church on April 16th to learn more about the latest plans for Brookside Circle. The developer continues with his plans to build a single 3-story building with 55 2-bedroom units on the upper end of the site, leaving room for additional future development. City Council passed new multi-family design standards at their meeting on June 8, which apparently will not minimize the height nor the size of this building, but will require some additional landscaping and rearranged parking. A similar proposal for Augusta Road by another developer is being hotly contested by their surrounding neighborhoods. More information will be available later in the summer. The SC Housing Authority will announce the results of the competition for funding in early August.
GREENVILLE CRIME
The most prevalent crime problem in Greenville is auto theft or burglary. If you are a victim, even if nothing is taken, our Police Department requests that you contact the non-emergency dispatch number at 271-5333 and ask that an officer be dispatched to take your information. Help prevent this problem by being alert to any suspicious activity, and keeping your parked vehicles locked, and in your driveways when possible. Review Greenville Crime at:

VEHICLE BREAK-INS, CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
PREVENTION
The Greenville Police Department believes that car break-ins can be reduced if citizens regularly practice the following prevention tips:
1. Always lock your car after parking it (at home or elsewhere).
2. Do not leave valuables in the car.
3. Do not leave keys in the car. Keys left in the car often result in the car being stolen.
4. Park in well-lighted areas.
5. Mark your car radios, other car equipment, CD's and tools with your operator license number.
6. Use heavy duty locks for tool boxes and if they are stored in pickup trucks, secure the tool boxes to the bed of the truck.
7. Be observant. Notify the police if you see anyone acting in a suspicious manner - such as loitering around cars or looking into cars.
What to do if you observe a car break-in in progress!
If you observe a car break-in in progress, do not intervene but call 911 to notify the police. When reporting the crime to police communications personnel, please provide the following information.
1. LOCATION: such as an address or block number, or a specific location in a parking lot.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE THIEF: provide identifiers such as race, gender, age, height, weight, hair color and length, color and length of facial hair, colors and style of clothing, any identifying marks such as tattoos and scars.
3. DIRECTION: give the direction of travel if the thief flees from the scene.
4. DESCRIPTION OF CAR: give a description of the car if the thief flees from the scene in a vehicle. Describe the make and type of car, color and year, special designs or features such as a vinyl top, mag wheels, body damage, pinstripes, etc.
5. DESCRIPTION OF THE VICTIM'S CAR
What to do if your car has been broken into!
1. Notify the Police Department. A report of the break-in alerts the police to crime activity in certain areas and it allows the police to respond with an investigation or extra patrols.
2. A report can be filed by phone at (864) 271-5333 – non-emergency Dispatch. An officer can come to the scene if requested.
3. Provide complete information on the stolen property, especially property with serial numbers or other identifying numbers or marks.
NEIGHBOR SERVICES!!
