    DELLWOOD'S OWN ALL-AMERICAN
    REPRINTED FROM THE GREENVILLE NEWS
    By Bob Castello

Sean Conn wanted to be an All-American in some sport, but he never could stay healthy long enough to try.

He still wound up an All-American, albeit of the academic variety. Conn, a Wade Hampton High senior, has been selected a U.S. Lacrosse High School Academic All-American.

As a sophomore, Conn dislocated his left shoulder and was sidelined during football season. As a junior, a right shoulder dislocation cut short his lacrosse season.

"I didn't get hurt this year, but I wasn't able to get back up to par, to where I should have been to be an athletic All-American," Conn said. "I just didn't have the time to do it, so it was pretty cool to get the academic (honor)."

Conn, the valedictorian of Wade Hampton's senior class, has a 5.25 grade-point average this year and a 5.0125 GPA overall. He will attend Clemson University and be in the mechanical engineering honors program.

Conn, also the student body president, competed in cross country this year and was the fourth finisher on a Wade Hampton team that won the Greenville County meet and placed fourth at state.

As a midfielder on the lacrosse team, Conn was among the Generals' leaders in ground balls and scoring. He capped his season with the academic honor. "It's kind of a blessing from God that I got that," he said. "I'm an All-American in something. That's something I've always wanted."

Congratulations Sean, Dellwood is very proud of you!!

    STREET SWEEPING
Thursday, June 14 is the next scheduled time for our turn in the city program for cleaning curbs and gutters. In Dellwood, the schedule is the second Thursday in each even numbered month, except the October and December months when the city uses a leaf-vacuum system. Please cut back any shrubs or plants hanging over curbs, avoid placing debris in the street after our Tuesday garbage collection during those weeks, and make sure trashcans and vehicles are out of the street so the equipment can operate properly.

    FEBRUARY 2007

We’ve been through a lot of holidays since our last newsletter! We hope Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s, Valentine’s Day and several others were all enjoyed by you and your family!

    HALLOWEEN!!
Recalling a past holiday, the weather on Halloween night was perfect, and we had plenty of trick-or-treaters patrolling the streets. Many stopped by the Neighborhood Association table on Wrenn Street where the adults enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate, and the kids added a treat to their bag of loot. Thanks to Wrenn Street neighbors Ken Ansell, Belinda and Charlie Wilson, and April and Alex Campbell for staffing the table and keeping the hot chocolate flowing. You can check out some of the costumes on our website, www.dellwoodneighbors.net. Some may think Halloween is just for the kids, but there are plenty of adults in Dellwood who enjoy it a lot!

    Neighborhood Dinner
On November 9, about 40 of our adults enjoyed a barbeque dinner at the Stone Lake Pool clubhouse. Because the dinner was just prior to Veteran’s Day, we also recognized and applauded the many attendees who have served in some branch of our armed forces. We’re grateful for your service to our country. Also, thanks to Belinda Wilson for assistance with reservations, to Ken Ansell, Kathryne and David Bailey and Donna Rhyne for setup, and to all the willing hands who helped with cleanup and storage of the tables and chairs. The dinner attracted many of our longtime neighbors, and we really enjoyed catching up with each other. Former residents Mary and Don Deming were also in attendance (thank you Linda Hutton!) Your Neighborhood Association wants to sponsor an adult event which will appeal to our newer residents as well. If you have a suggestion or idea, please email me at dirhyne@aol.com, or call Donna Rhyne at 292-0985.

    WELCOME!
Several new neighbors have arrived since the fall. Please stop by and make them welcome!!

  • 415 Dellwood…Brenda and Mark Farren, moving from Columbia, SC.
  • 206 Holmes…the Sennyey family, moving here from Vermont. Catherine and Pongrácz, with children Paul, age 6, and Julie, age 3. 244-9916
  • 25 Coventry…Joel Corley
  • 213 Alpine…Allison and Jay Miller, with 4-month-old daughter McNeal, from the eastside of Greenville.

    CITY PEOPLE…FOUND!!
Neighbors will remember that the City People section was missing from our Wednesday Greenville News in late October and early November, even though it was available and distributed in other parts of town. At that point, the newspaper was not receptive to individual requests to reinstate it. Thanks to those at the BBQ dinner who responded to our request to contact the paper, and especially to neighbor Linda Hutton who wrote a memorable request to numerous executives at the News. The following week, City People was reinstated. It was a great example of the impact that we can have working together as a neighborhood.

    SYMPATHY
The neighborhood extends our sympathy to the families of several longtime Dellwood residents.

  • Lula Lewis died December 8 in Murrells Inlet. She was a former resident at 412 Dellwood for almost 40 years, living in recent years with her daughter.
  • Christine Boland, sister of Lula Lewis and a resident at 213 Dellwood for more than 30 years, died December 14 after a brief illness.
  • Fritz Cappell, former resident at 101 Alpine Way for almost 20 years died December 31. He was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean Conflict.
  • Arline Kendrick, current owner and former resident at 136 Dellwood for more than 35 years, living in recent years near her son in San Antonio, died January 30. Arline was an officer in the Dellwood Club and the chair of numerous committees working for the welfare of our neighborhood. In honor of her many years of service to the community, a small memorial was sent to Northside Methodist Church, in the tradition of the Dellwood Club.
  • We also extend our sympathy to Buck and Betty Chiles on the October 29th death of his brother-in-law, Bobby Thackston, husband of former Dellwood Club President Catherine Thackston, to Tom Parris on the death of his brother Mike, and to the Jay Bopp family on the death of his father, artist Emery Bopp.

    A VOICE FROM THE PAST…
The following email was a nice surprise from a former resident. With her permission, I am sharing it with the neighbors. It’s a nice example of the fond memories that many hold for this neighborhood, long after they leave.

    WHAT FUN!!!
Hello- I am Barbara Mickelsen Ervin and I grew up in Dellwood at 308 Holmes Dr. (Next door to Lois Newell...Tell Lois Hello-and Joyce Curry too!!!) We built the house in 1954-and owned it until the mid 90's.(Polly and John Mickelsen-Pat,Marcia and Barbara)

I was doing some research on what happened in Greenville on the day I was born for the kids at the elem school in Honea Path where I am the Art teacher -when this newsletter caught my eye- I really enjoyed reading all that is going on there- It always has been a very active and friendly neighborhood.

I am so glad to see it staying that way. My mom did a lot with the Dellwood Club- Did you know that she illustrated a cookbook that the club members contributed to way back in the 60's! I do ride through on occasion when I get to Greenville -just to touch base with good memories I guess.

    Keep up the good work

    much love - Barbara

    NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
It’s no surprise that our slate of Association officers was re-elected unanimously in December. Serving you again for 2007 will be:

  • President, Ken Ansell, 8 Wrenn, 292-1312
  • Vice President, Allison Walker, 305 Holmes, 344-1244
  • Secretary, Nilly Barr, 2 Dellwood, 244-4372
  • Treasurer, Kathryne Bailey, 322 Holmes, 268-1686

Our inaugural year was a great success, with more than 70 families supporting the Association efforts. During the year we enjoyed…
…a May hotdog supper on Wrenn
…August National Night Out ice cream social
    …September Neighborhood Yard Sale
…Halloween Night hot-chocolate and treats for the kids
…November adult BBQ supper at Stone Lake Pool Clubhouse

Also, our entrance signs have had a facelift, Yard-of-the-Month was revived, our Website is fabulous, and the newsletter keeps us in touch. Local businesses and neighborhood business owners have been wonderfully supportive.
    Not a bad start!

    WE NEED YOU
We want to keep the momentum pushing forward, and need YOU to be a part of that to make us successful. For only $10 per family, you can show your support and help us as we continue to improve. Thank you to those who paid early at the BBQ dinner in November. We are working hard to provide opportunities for fellowship in the neighborhood, and to stay united. Please send a check made out to the Dellwood Neighborhood Association, attention: Kathryne Bailey at 322 Holmes, and help us continue the work of keeping this one of the best neighborhoods in the City!

    ZONING
The City will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday February 27, at 4pm, in the City Hall Council Chambers, for the purpose of considering revisions to the Greenville Zoning Ordinance and Land Development Regulations. You may recall that LUDO was scrapped several years ago after strong objections from neighborhoods in the City. This is a second attempt, supposedly focused on changing the format of the regulations rather than major changes to content.

Our North Main neighbors have already urged that the deadlines be moved out in order to allow more time for neighborhoods to review. I have a copy of the proposed document if anyone wants to see it prior to the hearing. Watch the news for possible changes to the schedule.

SAY IT ISN’T SO! By now you’ve probably heard or read that Deb Sofield will not run for reelection to her City Council seat representing District 1…us! For eight years she has been an attentive, responsive, effective representative for our area and for Dellwood in particular. We hope that whoever chooses to follow in her path understands that the bar has been set high. We’re thankful for her years of service to us and to the City, and wish her well as she continues to develop her successful businesses.

    POLICE REPORT
The night of January 15, three teenagers were arrested for destructive joyriding through several neighborhoods, including ours. Eight or more car windows were shot out using BB’s, slingshots and marbles. Although this was a random act, we need to keep a watchful eye out for any suspicious activity and report it quickly so that police have a true picture of any problems in the area.

    THANK YOU
Thanks to neighbor Jim Hardwick and Hardwick Printing for providing their services free of charge for this newsletter! We appreciate your gift to the neighborhood! And thanks to those who deliver our Digest. Please continue to notify our Sunshine Lady, Lois Newell, with news of those needing a cheery note or card from the community. Contact her at 244-1528.

    LOOKING AHEAD
We continue to work toward new signs for our entrances. A Palmetto Pride grant request will be submitted this summer, for possible additional funding. Contact Allison Walker at 244-1244 for info or to contribute suggestions.

We hope to offer an Easter Egg Hunt for Dellwood children, and a May cookout for all. Watch for details/info later.

The Salvation Army sent a letter of thanks for our contributions after the neighborhood yard sale in September.

Yard of the Month will begin again in April. We’re trying to recognize effort and improvement…not just the best in the neighborhood. Maybe it is you!!
