Dellwood History

Dellwood was originally developed by Central Realty Corporation, owned by the Timmons family of Greenville County, which also founded and owned Canal Insurance.
The following timeline information comes from scrapbooks compiled by members of the Dellwood Club.
1950s
December 1953: Dellwood Club organized at a meeting at 33 Alpine. Several charter members still reside in the neighborhood. The stated purpose of the club was “to promote all interests for improvement of this community”.
June 1954: City bus service extended into the neighborhood.
August 1956: At a Dellwood Club meeting with other invited area residents and clubs a drive is begun to develop a playground on land owned by the YMCA at the corner of Holmes and Twin Lakes Drive.
May 1957: Swings, slides, climbing equipment and two baseball diamonds installed at what became known as the Johnny Holmes Playground.
Late 1950s: Dellwood club holds annual dinner/dances at the Poinsett Hotel and Greenville Country Club.
1960s
March 1964: Mayor asks all homeowners in Greenville to plant dogwood trees. Hundreds are planted in Dellwood.
May 1964: Neighborhood petitions for curbs and gutters, city agrees to pick up 50 percent of the cost if homeowners pay for the rest.
May 1965: New Dellwood signs installed, carved by Gen. John Woodberry
Spring 1967: A petition was presented to City Council to close Holmes park because of lack of maintenance and inappropriate use. Dellwood and White Oak Clubs opposed closing at the council next meeting and the council voted to keep and upgrade the park. The communities raised funds for the park, and residents helped clean it up.
June 1969: Dedication of Holmes Park plaque, located at the edge of the parking lot.
Late 1960s, Early 1970s: Dellwood Club receives several awards, recognizing volunteer work around the city.
1970s
February 1972: Dellwood Club begins project to build a picnic shelter at Holmes Park
May 1972: Navy Seebees began construction on shelter
August 1972: Shelter dedicated.
Spring 1973: Planters added around Dellwood signs.
1980s
1980: Dellwood receives Board of Realtors Award for springtime appearance and named “The Pride of Greenville.”
1990s
Dellwood Club primarily promotes fellowship and food, holding September street suppers and Progressive dinners at Christmastime.
2000s
2005: Neighborhood Association organized, and Dellwood joins World Wide Web.
